Culture and civilization
Maybe many people can't tell the difference between culture and civilization, including myself. but recently I learned related knowledge from some books and had an initiate understanding. when I read an article from The Age today, I suddenly have some thoughts on culture and civilization.
"American culture is very strong. It's pervasive and as these economies are growing, and as people's incomes are growing, aspects of Western culture are becoming more appealing."
Article writer thinks the fusion of american culture and chinese culture is the reason why western companies make big success in china (actually IKEA belongs to scandivia culture). but I have different viewpoint. I think chinese culture doesn't change but the civilization does!
Globalization only speeds up civilization fusion. this is myself stand. to tell the truth, I don't want to guide readers to the discussion about social science and anthropology. however, recently many business innovations show the important usage of social science and anthropology in business field. I am an advocate of business globalization and I believe globalization only brings collision and fusion of different civilization. the local culture will always not be changed except the human beings belonging to that culture die out!
Different cultures can coexist in one civilization. when we look back upon 17th century or so, it took long time for tea to be a popular drinking in western world. can we say western culture was changed for that? I think we can not. from the historic record, western people realized/believed drinking tea can enhance health, then tea became popular. it's the awaking of civilization. so if we have a look at china today, I would like to say civilization becomes similiar with western world, but chinese old culture doesn't change.
I believe this topic is useful to understand business globalization and business world. if I have sponsor or like-minded partners, I really would like to do this project. my suggestion is "don't try to change culture but make perfect fusion of civilization".
