Facebook: widget startup’s nightmare or safe harbor?

Facebook announced their new strategy: F8 platform. GigaOM use a precise term to describe it "social OS". if looking at its current partner list, giant web companies are included; even some hottest web startups. I couldn't helping praying for new startups because Facebook's large user base will make the strong stronger and the first mover stronger!

human being is a strange animal. I have installed google toolbar, then I will not install Live toolbar any more. the same, user installs amazon's book review widget on facebook page; then normally will not install another book review widget. but any startup/company wouldn't like to ignore the huge potential buyers/users from Facebook. how should they do?

   1) be the frist mover! if your product are the first appearing on facebook pages, you have gain much more advantage than your rivals. the following thing you should do is maintaining users' loyalty.

   2) must be very innovative! you are a late entrant. but if your product is revolutionary, you still can beat off your rival's first moving advantage. apple's iPod is a good example.

  3) be the smart integrator! if one product can integrate many products' functions, definitely users will use this super product. people always like easy, simple and time-saving.

   4) choose another powerful platform. if you think you have no chance to succeed with Facebook, how about MySpace? or Xing? or……..  choice lies in everywhere!

if you are a widget company, how will you react on Facebook's platform? I am interested!
