“Digg” in retail?

Digg is a typical user-generated content (UGC) website. via readers' thumb up or down, the digg number of the content obviously is proportionate with the popularity potential. it seems born for internet because internet can easily gather worldwide users. with the participation from huge amount of people, Digg-like services become meaningful.

I think UGC application is not limited in web service industry. there should be many alternative ways to integrate into traditional industries. now, I will simply talk about digg service in retail business.supermarket

In fact, retail has common places with internet: easily gathering huge people; influenced by others' comments; emphasizing users' feedback and behavior; overflowed information etc. these preconditions drop a hint on digg's bright future in retail industry. certainly, the service design and operation will be different with internet mode!

  Small change on shelf

normally, the green area in the upper picture is placed a product card with product name and price. if we add a new electronic device on that which can realize thumb up/down and digg activities, the shelf is outfitted with digg function now. of course, we can design more complicated device to complete more market research functions. I think it's very easy.

  How the service works?

for instance, yesterday I went to supermarket and bought a new cookie. I found it's very delicious. today I go to the market to buy again. so I would like to press digg or thumb up button on the shelf. as a result, other new buyers will see the digg/thumb up number and definitely will strengthen their buying incentives. moreover, merchants can design all kinds of award events to thank all the participants. the only thing need to solve is the click fraud. maybe the suppliers will cheat buyers by this means.

I believe retail will not the only potential area for digg-like services. many others are waiting for your exploration.

This idea is great … but for sure cheaters or children always have the bad habits to touch everything !
An easy way to measure in my mind is :
As the use of electronic wireless tags now-a-days allow to change price tags easily, why establishing first some stats per number of products sold. But same as the first one, this can be biaised by the people who only care about the price and not about the quality !

Anyway, people tastes are different, one sort of cookie can’t fits to everyone. But when you don’t know a product for sure, advises from others who have experienced it is necessary !

PS : don’t use my e-mail, i never read it.

    Hi, Gaoshan,
thanks for your coming. great supplement. I have thought about RFID technology, but in fact RFID is used for supply chain management and my idea is not in the supply chain. so I guess it’s hard to integrate together. even if integrated, I think the cost will be high. and we know RFID is very sensitive with cost. maybe RFID experts can give us some suggestion:)
