“Leftover” project
Readers must be curious about the post title. but I am telling a serious topic: how to rescue starving people living in slums? right, I think leftover is the right food source. UN estimates there are almost 1 billion people living in slums around the world, and hunger is the main threat to their lives. every government is making policy and providng subsidy, but the effect is not very obvious. they are still facing serious starve. however, the rich people living in the same city often linger in the luxury restaurants and waste huge amount food. this phenomenon is far startling in the business dinner. so I believe leftover is a big food source for slum starving people.
Would slum like to accept leftover?
Eating other's leftover will disgust modern civilized people. but thinking about human history, wars and nature disasters have made human live like animal. today, starving people's situation is similiar with the cruel history. life is the most important thing. moreover, the fresh leftover from lux restaurant should be healthy. if the quality of leftover can be well controlled, I believe slum will not refuse. actually, we often eat ourselves leftover at home.
How to promote the project?
UN or other public organizations can setup such organization. organization will work closely with good business restaurants to collect good leftover and control the quality of leftover. then starving people can go to the designated place for the leftover food. although starving people don't need to pay, the food is not free. people need to participate non-official causes in return for society. therefore, it will reduce social class gap and is beneficial to remedy the slum problems.
Project extension
This project can be extended widely. many valuable wastes are useful for slum people. we can connect them by the same way. thereafter, I believe more harmonic society can be achieved. plus governments' efforts, slums will disappear and no starving people in city any more!

This idea isn’t viable IMHO. You forget that all these leftovers would have to be transported somehow to the starving people. That would require refrigerated transportation, and would cost a fortune.
I believe that raw food would cost less, and is more favorable
In any case, the whole idea sounds a bit like when The Yes Men (http://www.theyesmen.org/movie/) proposed to recycle human excraments to produce burgers for third world people…

Elad, thanks for your comments. this idea positions people living in the same city no matter rich or starving people. if we can map the restaurants, we can figure out the most economic way. I believe modern math can help us lot:)
I will find time to watch the movie, useful information!
