Can auto use wind power?
We only hear of hybrid power auto, fuel cell auto and solar cell auto. wind energy as an alternative energy source, can it be used to drive the auto? I am interested in this.
To generate wind power, normally need suitable wind speed, good designed wind turbine. the wind turbine is placed on very high tower, and the larger diameter the rotor has, the more power it can generate. there is a rough equation to estimate wind power:
we can see the wind speed and the rotor area play important roles to generate power. when a car is running on the highway, it's easy to reach 100km/h, equal to around 25m/s. so the wind speed is almost 25m/s too. but the rotor area is limited to around 1m without doubt. combining to these 2 factors, how large power can be produced if a car is equipped with a micro wind turbine? I don't know. but I found an article from TU delft in netherlands, you can download it here! in this article, researchers made a wind power prototype generator which can be placed on top of the office building with 2m rotor diameter and 3m height. the turbine can produce about 2.5kw power. so I can estimate wind turbine on a car can produce more power than that if we can really integrate a wind turbine into a car!
thinking about the driving power a car needed, it's impossible for car only to use wind power. so maybe hybrid power is a choice. we can use fuel cell/solar cell + wind power to drive a car. at low speed road, car use the fuel cell power, but at the high speed road, car can use wind power or store wind power.
I don't know whether my idea is meaningful from technology side and economic value. maybe it's bullshit, but I would like to come up with wild and weird ideas:)
