How to “make” large display screen for mobile phone?
Mobile phone may be the most widely-used digital product. as more and more applications integrated into mobile phone, it's not only for communication any more. you can play games, watch vedio, read web blog and handle email etc. all of these applications are interactive, so the display screen plays a very important role to bring better experience to the users. many consumers are not very satisfied with current small screen, but no any company can provide a very good solution to equip mobile phone with a large display screen.
I think about this question. and I think the solution only can go to 2 directions: flexible display screen and a special communication way with large scale display screen of other equipments. so I analyzed these 2 solutions:
1) flexible display screen:
at current, there are tens of companies involving in this field. technologies include OLED, PLED, E-INK etc. they are aiming to use low cost roll2roll process to manufacture this kind of flexible screen. although prototypes show competitive advantages, there are still some technical bottle-necks: OLED is very senstive with humidity; E-INK has no full color prototypes currently; etc. but even if they can solve these issues, how to make large foldable display screen for mobile phone? I think it will take at least 10 years to realize our expectation.
2) design a protocol to allow mobile phone to communicate with other large scale display screen:
we don't need to figure out the real large screen for mobile phone. there are already lots of large screens around us like LCD TV, PLASMA TV, OLED TV, SED TV, laptop screen, etc. so if we can teach mobile phone to communicate with them, we can easily and freely display the content of mobile phone onto them and get more better interactive experiences. so what we need to do is to design a protocol so that mobile phone can use those large screens.
after I analyze these 2 solutions, I think the second solution is a better way. it provides more choices, and the cost for consumers will be lower than first solution. it's so wonderful someday we can freely use our TV screen, computer screen, even(very large outdoor ad. screen) for our mobile phone display.
the only left thing is how to design protocol. I am waiting for experts' solution. and welcome to discuss this with me!
Latest update@2nd, Nov 2006: I just found this site named wiffiti. they innovate a service to allow people send txt message to a large screen, can change color, bright or grey the text. really funny. I think my idea goes to right direction.

Isn’t the main hangup with any type of wireless video the bandwidth requirements needed?
I mean, I guess theoretically you could build off of existing remote control type protocols like RDP and citrix.
But those aren’t really going to work for high usage things like DVD, etc.

thanks for your check in. I think maybe we can create a bluetooth-like protocol or a brandnew thing. but to tell the truth, I didn’t dig into this area much:)
