Globalization strategy part 1: Change yourself

when people do something, they often intend to refer other's experience or automaticly search the similar situation in their minds. for some technical issue or process problem, it's a real shortcut without doubt. but when you lead a company or design business strategies, the above method  is not a smart and right way.  notice needed, "you" here not only means business executives, but include consultants as well.

first change you need to make: business growth way is changing.

when you startup your business, you always choose some place around your living place; then grow your business in your country. until you think you have leading advantages in your home market, you will begin to expand oversea. finally your company will become an international company if you can continue your success. just like the following picture, i take china company for example:

 this way has been used widely since the business was born, I think. but under the globalization impact, this roadmap is not the most effecient any more. globalization brings free trading possibility, talents free distrubition, information overflow and almost borderless world.  if you insist this old mode, what you lose will far more than what you can achieve. so in order to fit the globalization, we suggest to use the following growth way:

here, a key phrase is "global thinking". I think it means 2 things. one is real action globally; the other is action locally but based on global information. so come back to the business growth way, when you come up with the startup idea, you should put yourself into the global business to analyze which market is the easiest entrance market together with big market potential. then you will make decision with global thinking: startup your business in that market directly or startup in your home market but pretending in that market. this is a very important step, especially for technology startups.

second change you need to make: information need to be globalized

actually in the globalizing world, getting global information is not difficult. we can say information is overflow when you plan to collect. so you don' t know which version is real and what kind of information can be used for your decision making. you will find it's hard for you to focus on the information you predefined. how to solve this problem, it's very easy in fact. one way is you can build a special team to handle global information( in the later part i will talk about this). or you can turn to professional 3rd-party organization. but unfortunately, this kind of organizations are rare.

third change you need to make: partnership will take very important role

when you do real business globalization, you will find limited resource like capital, talents etc and different regional culture are the biggest barrier. even for giant company like GE, IBM etc, they still can't do the real globalization by themselves. how about startups? the reasonable solution is partnering with local market players. it's not easy to find the most suitable partner. I suggest company especially like small and medium firm find professional consulting firm to do this. last point i want to emphasize is monitoring your partner's performance. buildup partnership is only the first step, how to realize win win is the key step. I think monitoring partner's performance is an important  part during the partnership contract.

so if you would like to take these mind changing, congratulations! you are ready to do the real business globalization.
